Claude Smith composed this Rhapsody in 1971 for Warren Covington, an accomplished trombonist and leader of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra from 1958-1961. It represents a remarkably creative and challenging collaboration between two musicians, each at the height of their artistic careers. Available for the first time in a sparkling edition for trombone and piano, this is unquestionably a significant contribution to the repertoire for the serious trombonist. A concert band accompaniment is available on rental.
This dazzling solo work was written to display the virtuosic talent of Rich Matteson, perhaps the most uniquely gifted performer on baritone from the 1950s through the 1980s. Fusing elements of technical mastery and jazz idioms, the work is an absolute tour de force for an accomplished soloist. Transcribed for solo and piano from the concert band score, this appears for the first time in a stunning edition for use as a recital feature or concert showpiece. A very accessible concert band accompaniment complements the work and is available on rental.
The tuba performer's capabilities with range, flexibility, lyricism and technical mastery are beautifully showcased in this effective work.
