New Concert Band Sheet Music

German composer Woldemar Bargiel was the half-brother of Clara Schumann and composed a significant amount of chamber music. He was supported by fellow composers Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. His Adagio, opus 38 for cello and orchestra is an eloquently beautiful solo work and makes a very attractive solo feature for euphonium with wind accompaniment. This setting was premiered with euphonium soloist Misa Meade accompanied by the Loyola University Concert Band (New Orleans).

Charles Gounod's opera "Faust," loosely based on the Faustian legend and the play by Goethe, was premiered in August 1859 and remains one of the most frequently performed grand operas in the repertory. One of the more memorable melodies in Gounod's score occurs in Act IV when an on-stage band marches in as Valentin and the soldiers returning from war sing the rousing Soldiers' Chorus. This march, along with the marches from Wagner's "Tannhauser" and Verdi's "Aida," are among the most beloved of operatic marches.

Travel back to times of the oldest civilizations, whose very existence appear to us today as barely visible ghosts of a long bygone past. Haunting flute and trumpet solos provide a musical invitation that transports listeners back to ancient times long forgotten. The music gradually grows, gaining momentum as melodic lines swirl in and out sight like spinning wisps of mist, gaining strength and substance into the unyielding vortex of the exciting conclusion.

In 1884, a locomotive tossed a spark that started a fire that reduced the town of Milton, Pennsylvania to ashes. A majestic fanfare depicts the vibrant town with train whistles in the flutes, train bells in the chimes, whirling engines in the brass, and telegraphs in woodwinds and mallets. Growing dissonances depict the fierce firestorm that abruptly dissolves into a solemn oboe solo of the town's sadness, while paper bags and plastic water bottles represent the smoldering fire. The music then turns from sorrow to hope as small sections of the school's alma mater embed the message of hope and optimism before the rousing and triumphant coda.

Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of fire, lightning, wind, and volcanoes. According to legend, she lives in Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes. The chant of her devotees while Kilauea spews lava and fire into the sky is the basis of this composition. The first of four connected sections is Tribute, where the chant starts as a solo voice that adds weight to the chant with each repetition. The Awakening begins with an ominous mood that builds to an explosive climax as Pele wakes and reveals herself in full glory. March to the Sea comes at a faster tempo as two themes, creator and destroyer, interweave during Pele's unyielding journey to the ocean, reaching fever pitch as Fire Meets Water.

A collection of Australian folk songs that depict the sights and sounds of the beautiful landscape with an Aussie twist and tongue-in-cheek tuneful way. The first movement includes The Wonderful Crocodile and The Old Jig-Jog, folk songs full of energy and dance-like qualities. River Fraser provides the melodic content for the second movement, a slow and impassioned lament. The third movement uses three popular tunes that range in style from joyful dancing as in an Irish reel, to a poignant and haunting flavor, to a brave and dramatic march that dies away bit by bit before the explosive ending of energy and good humor.
