New Orchestra Music

A best seller! The title of this exciting musical depiction is, of course, the residence of Sherlock Holmes.  Three musical motifs depict Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and the arch-villain Professor Moriarity.  The music is fun to play as it moves from thoughtful to curious and finally intense!

The harmonic beauty and seamless polyphony of Bach's second Brandenburg Concerto has been retained in this very true string orchestra adaptation of the original. The flute, oboe, and trumpet solos have been reassigned to the principal players in the violin, viola, and cello sections. Though shortened to work better in the educational setting, very few concessions were made in the level of difficulty. All parts are given energetic lines and interesting material to challenge students in their mastery of the authentic Baroque playing style.

In this exciting multi-level arrangement, orchestra students can experience the thrill of Beethoven's original symphony. Beginners will feel successful playing the familiar melody from their method book, accompanied by a superb arrangement for intermediate and advanced orchestras. This abbreviated version is long enough to highlight some of the best moments from the final movement, but short enough to use as a grand finale for any pyramid concert. Optional high school-level wind and brass parts are highly encouraged but not required for performance. A great selection to motivate and inspire young string students.

A bit of Irish lore woven into a mystical piece for string orchestra. This original work is based on the story of St. Ghobnait, also known as the patron saint of Ballyvourney. According to legends heard in County Galway, this peaceful sixth-century beekeeper was forced by a family feud to flee to the island of Inishere, following a vision to eventually settle in Ballyvourney, County Cork. St. Ghobnait was remembered for healing the sick with the honey she harvested. The faster section of the composition represents her flight, with calm years of rest on either side reflected in contrasting sections.

The winner of the 2008 Texas Orchestra Directors Association composition contest!  This American tour de force has shades of Copland mixed with exciting fiddling motives and themes fit for a Hollywood western.  The composer describes it: "The Snake River flows through Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and I tried to capture some of its grandeur in the music.  The 'stomp' comes from the heavy hoedown feel in cut time. It's written in a rondo form, and its themes have a familiar style that is easy to capture.  Students will love the fact that each string part is interesting and unique."

This Haydn symphony movement is a powerful example of the Sturm und Drang ("storm and stress") style favored by the composer in the 1760s and '70s. Arranged for string orchestra in the dark key of D minor, rhythmic and harmonic agitation propel the music forward with strong themes and energy. Both musicians and audience will be captivated by this masterpiece, making it a perfect concert or contest closer for your advancing ensemble.
